Places to be covered in Bike ride and Tour:
Mahabaleshwar :
It is a hill station situated in the Sayhadri range of Maharashtra state. It is situated about southwest of Pune at a distance of 115 kms and from Mumbai 285 kms. It is situated in Satara district at an altitude of 1372 m above sea level. Here we can see and enjoy cool mountain air, lush greenery, breathtaking valleys and Soaring Mountain peaks.
Panch ganga temple:
This place has it in the Hindu mythology that the five rivers Krishna, Venna, Gayatri, Savitri and Koyna show their appearance in the form of five close springs and make their presence here.
Venna Lake:
You can enjoy boating, fishing and ponytail riding on the Venna Lake. There are many interesting stalls of entertainment where you can play games and indulge in some snacks.
Various Points:
The Kates point again gives you a spectacular view of the Krishna Valley from a different angle. The Elphinston point a few paces ahead gives a spectacular view of the Koyna and Sahyadri valleys. Down south to this point is the Hunter’s point which gives a splendid view of the Koyna Valley.
Move down a bit more and you come across something called the Arthur’s seat. This is the place that clearly demarcates the Konkan and Deccan territories in Mahabaleshwar by the barren deep Savitri valley to the left and a shallow valley to the right.
To the left on Arthur’s seat you have a series of steps that lead you to Tiger springs. This is where the River Savitri is supposed to emerge.
Monkey point and Savitri point:
Savitri point is one beautiful place to be. In fact I found this to be quite appealing – very little open space, not much crowd and then the Deep valleys were just inches from where we stood. It is actually a wonderful echo point. You get a resound of your voice after about five seconds!
Tapola (The Mini Kashmir):
Also known as the Mini Kashmir of the west is a 25 km drive away from Mahabaleshwar. The drive is magnificent, with two rivers flowing around the high hills Koyna on one side and Solshi on the other. Both these rivers meet at Tapola. The dam is the biggest in Maharashtra - Known as 'Shivsagar'. The famous boat Club in Shivsagar is very popular for motor boats. One can enjoy boating here at nominal charges.
Vasota Fort:
Situated in the dense forest, surrounded by the river Koyna, is the fort of Vasota, which according to ‘Dnyaneshwari’ means resting place. This fort is also known as Vyaghragad. This old warrior offers one of the most thrilling treks in the Sahyadri as far as trekking through forestation is concerned. Dense forest all the way through, panoramic view of the Shivsagar Lake in the east and Konkan on the west, wonderful cave at Nageshwar for a stay, makes this a fort of special interest for amateur trekkers and photographers.
Though not too much of remnants are present on Vasota, the view of Koyna backwaters on one side and Konkan on the other side is quite satisfying.
Pratap Gad:
Type : Hill Fort
Region : Satara
Height : 2000 feet
Region : Satara
Height : 2000 feet
Pratapgad, a very strong hill fort built by Shivaji in 1656-58 AD, is 24kms west of Mahabaleshwar and about 145kms south of Pune. Before Shivaji, the hill, known as Bhorapya, was a flat-topped high round rock at the head of the densely forested Koyana basin. The construction of the fort was entrusted to Moropant Pingale, who later became Shivaji’s Peshwa, and Hiroji Indulkar, the architect. A special feature of the fort is its double line of fortification and walls on all sides, their heights varying according to the nature of the ground. The upper fort is built across the northern and western crest of the hill measuring about 180sq.metres. The lower fort is built on the southern and the eastern terrace with walls and strong bastions at corners on projecting spurs. Apart from other monuments, there is on the eastern portion of the lower fort the temple of Bhavani, the family deity of the Bhosales, built by Shivaji.
